Gina Carano was one of the pioneers of women’s mixed martial arts. She spearheaded the expansion of women’s MMA way before fighters like Ronda Rousey and Amanda Nunes. She started out in May Thai and eventually transitioned to MMA making her pro debut on June 10th, 2006 for World Extreme Fighting in Las Vegas. The fight only lasted 38 seconds and Carano finished Leiticia. Pestova via KO. She went on an unbeaten streak over the next two years with finishes of Rosi Sexton and Tonya Evinger before facing her toughest opponent in Cris Cyborg for the Strikeforce belt.
Carano suffered her first professional loss in MMA in the first round as Cyborg proved to be too much for Carano. This would also be Carano’s last MMA fight as she retired with a 7 and 1 record.
Driven not only, by her good looks but her actions in the cage, Gina Carano is often regarded as one of the first female fighters to put women’s MMA on the map and help it gain a mainstream reputation.

After retiring from fighting, Carano went on to pursue a career in acting as well as entertainment. She starred as Crush on the revamp of American Gladiators and well as having a role in the Command and Conquer video game seres starring in Red Alert 3 as Natasha Volkova, a purchasable hero unit, portraying the Soviet sniper/commando in various cut scenes.

Her break out role came in the Steven Soderbergh directed spy thriller Haywire, where Carano starred opposite Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, Antonio Banderas and Michael Douglas. Carano’s big break landed her roles in movies like Fast and Furious 6, Extraction, Kickboxer: Vengeance and Deadpool where she plays Angel Dust. Carano has found new fans by staring as Carasynthia “Cara” Dune in the highly-acclaimed Star Wars spinoff series, The Mandalorian

For MMA fans, Gina Carano will always be remembered as a pioneer of women’s mixed martial arts. While her MMA career lasted just three years, her impact on the sport will be felt forever. Her legacy in MMA remains and every single female fighter today owes Carano a debt of gratitude.
