Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world champion Gordon Ryan suffered a recent case of strep throat that resulted in a trip to the hospital.

Ryan defeated Nick Rodriguez in his last BJJ competition at UFC Fight Pass Invitational 3 in December. He has amassed a 153-9-3 grappling record despite being just 27 years old.

Ryan’s astounding prowess in BJJ has risen the sport as a whole in recent years. He also won the ADCC 2022 World Championships, defeating five grapplers in 24 hours.

Many have wondered when Ryan will return to compete, although his return is indefinitely on hold after a recent health scare that led to him undergoing a tonsillectomy and surgery for his deviated septum.

Gordon Ryan Gives Encouraging Update After Recent Health Scare

In a recent Instagram post, Ryan detailed the severity of his condition.

In a follow-up post, Ryan gave his fans an update on Tuesday regarding his surgery and condition.

“Mission accomplished!” Gordon posted after surgery. “See you guys as soon as I’m healthy.”

Ryan trains under the prestigious BJJ mind John Danagher in Austin, TX. He has also made multiple appearances on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast.

Ryan hasn’t lost on the mats since a defeat to Vinny Magalhães in May 2018. He has defeated the likes of Craig Jones, Gabriel Gonzaga, and Bo Nickal in recent years.
